Mor Baselios Joseph I was ordained as the new Maphrian (Catholicos) of the Syriac Orthodox Church in India on March 25, 2025. The ordination took place at the Church of the Virgin Mary, Mother of God, in Atchaneh, Bikfaya, Lebanon, and was officiated by Syriac Orthodox Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II, assisted by senior metropolitans of the Holy Synod of the Syriac Orthodox Church. Mor Baselios Joseph I succeeds the late Mor Baselios Thomas I, who passed away in October at the age of 95.

Mor Baselios Joseph was born as the youngest of four children to Srambikkal Pallithitta Geevarghese and Saramma in Perumpilly, Mulanthuruthy on 10 November 1960. He is the grandchild of the cousin of St. Gregorios Geevarghese of Parumala. Joseph had his primary education at Perumpally Primary School and his high school education from Mulanthuruthy High School. He did pre-degree and degree studies from Maharajas College, Ernakulam and joined Mor Julius Seminary, Perumpally, for his theological studies. Joseph did his master's degree in philosophy from Trinity College Dublin, Ireland and higher studies in theology from the US.

At the age of 13 Joseph was ordained as a deacon by Geevarghese Mor Gregorios (Perumpally Thirumeni) at Mor Ignatius Dayro Manjinikkara on 25 March 1974. Dn.Joseph served as the secretary to Perumpally Thirumeni for many years. Later on 25 March 1984, Dn. Joseph was ordained Kassiso (Priest) at Marthoman Church, Mulanthuruthy, by Mor Baselios Paulose II, Catholicose.

Fr. Joseph was ordained as a Ramban by Moran Mor Ignatius Zakka I Iwas at Damascus on 15 January 1994. On very next day, Joseph Ramban was consecrated as Joseph Mor Gregorios Metropolitan by Moran Mor Ignatius Zakka I Iwas, then Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, at Damascus. He served as the Diocesan Metropolitan of Cochin diocese of the Jacobite Syrian Christian Church.

Fr. Joseph served as vicar of many churches in India and also in USA while he was studying in USA. H. G. Joseph Mar Gregorios Metropolitan also served as the president of Malankara Jacobite Syrian Sunday School Association (MJSSA), Manager of the Educational Trust of the church etc.

During this great ceremony of joy, we felicitate and congratulate Thirumeni on this grand occasion.
