Identity is a complex and fluid entity. It is compacted of diverse ingredients: emotional, mental and spiritual development, social and economic standing, ethnic and religious status, the prevailing political and ideological climate, and so on. If identity were a purely internal thing it would not have been vulnerable to manipulation by organized external forces. Human identity integrates matter and consciousness. The wholeness of human identity depends on the harmony of the local and universal. When identity is defined purely in material and local terms, it tends to precipitate conflict and alienation.
