REV. DR. VALSAN THAMPU
|
Rev. Valson Thampu, who combines wide-ranging experiences in higher education, social action, multi-faith initiatives, media, preaching, research and writing, has been engaged in mainstreaming the Christian presence in India. Leaving the certainties of a coveted job, he plunged into public life a few years ago and has become, in a short span of time, a household name. A proponent of the “spirituality of seeking,” as against the religiosity of mere compliance, Rev. Valson’s writings are distinguished for their originality of thought and freshness of style. All of his writings are a contemporary response to the words of Jesus, “Cast your net in the deep”.

Faith and Family: Signposts to Fullness of Life addresses the foundational issue of our times: wasting of the family. Tragedies arise, often, out of trivial things. Fortunately, the remedy too is simple. We do not have to move mountains to heal our homes. But we do have to turn a new leaf. Sadly, moving a mountain rather than turning a new leaf appeals to most men and women. Those who refuse to make even minor adjustments move inexorably to desperate remedies like divorce or suicide. Millions of men and women live in avoidable domestic purgatories. That should not happen to you. Healing and happiness can come to your home. This book tells you how.

The meeting point between God's time and man's time is God and not man. Time and space are the media that God created for life and no man has authority over it. We can be their stewards, but not owners. The distinction between God's time and man's time, therefore, does not exist in mind of God and it exists only in the plan of man. Ecstasy and depression are the foretastes of heaven and hell. There are times when hours fly past without our being aware of it and there are times when time hangs heavy on us according to human expressions. We are slaves of chronological time, but striving for the ultimate liberation in finding kairos in every encounter. Concept of "Fixed" points on Earth are all part of the great illusions we live under.

The Word is meant to help us to know and love God. Knowledge of God instills wholesome fear of God. The fear of the Lord involves not only an awareness of the nature of God but also a relationship with Him. The fear of Lord is a sign of spiritual vitality. The fear of the Lord fortifies us against despair and opens the door to a new beginning. The fear of the Lord ensures that we practice justice in inter-personal relationships.

Blind Bartimeus cried out to the Lord Jesus for mercy; Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou Son of David. It was foretold, that, when Messiah should come to save us, the eyes of the blind should be opened. We all are blind. Faith is the courage by which we will have the desire for opening our eyes. Once our eyes are open there will be enormous possibilities revealed in front of us. Faith of Bartimeus had made him whole.

For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known. We should come out to search instead of secluding our self to this small part. While we search for big things it reflects as the act of love. Jesus taught us that if we believe we will see much bigger.

The Kingdom of God does not clash or interfere with kingdoms of the earth. Christ's Kingdom was not of this world. It is the duty of subjects to render to ruler according to the laws, which are their due. Unilateral thinking is the way to devastation and thoughts of mutual interest is the sign of life. The hungry, thirsty, naked, prisoner all those in the parable of the Sheep and Goats are our neighbours. Concern and care to our neighbours is the supreme exhortation of the Gospel which will be counted as deeds for God.

Everything Godly are festivals. Creation, Incarnation of Jesus and all related Godly events are feasts. Word of God being feast, we are called to celebrate it as festival and unite all world together alleviating the differences prevailing in this world. Touching and healing of the Leper by Jesus was one of the most revolutionary act of that time which exhorts us to stretch our hands to our neighbours.

Our Lord Jesus came to this world not to be ministered but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. Culture of this world was to despise the one who minister and Jesus came to create respect for ministering. During His public mission in this world for three and a half years, He responded to the needs of the people with great care and mercy.
