His Grace Mathews Mar Barnabas was unique in many respects. His well-known
simplicity, humility, sincerity, innocence, deep spirituality, and purity of heart always remained prominent in our memory. His life was one of complete surrender to the Lord and to the Malankara Orthodox Church. His Grace's hospitality was also well-known. No one left the aramana (episcopal residence) without eating something. Even when His Grace visited churches or homes, he made sure everyone ate with him at the same time.
As His Grace neared the end of his life, his face radiated a divine presence. His time in America was a blessed period, marked by positive changes that fostered growth for both the Church and its people. His numerous writings stand as testament to his spiritual depth.
It is difficult at this time to accept the loss. One source of consolation for me is the belief that His Grace will serve as a powerful intercessor for everyone. His prayers from heaven will provide solace to many.
The Northeast American Diocese owes much to His Grace for its spiritual well-being. It was not an easy time when His Grace arrived in 1992 but somehow His Grace overcame all hurdles by His Grace’s prayer life. And I am sure His Grace’s spiritual presence will continue to nurture us. Now that His Grace has joined the Lord, let us hope that His Grace’s intercession will continue for us all. The different great qualities that we can emulate
will enrich us.
